For those interested in trying their hand at jewelry design, DCAD offers beginners workshops which enable students to learn specific techniques within a day or two.
Fashion Illustration will build drawing and observation skills to enable students to illustrate the fashion figure and create fashion designs.

BEGINNING CHAIN MAILLE WORKSHOP
COURSE ID: JD0019

Saturday, July 13; 1 PM – 4 PM
NON-CREDIT Tuition: $40; Materials Fee: $10
This workshop will begin with a brief review of the
history of the ancient art of chain maille. Several
examples of chain maille jewelry will show some of
the many possibilities of this technique. Students will
learn how to make clean, tight closures of jump rings
and will learn the byzantine weave to make a bracelet
in copper or brass. If time permits, the box weave,
which is closely related to the byzantine weave, will
also be taught. The only tools needed to do chain
maille are a pair of chain nose pliers. Pairs of pliers will
be available for use during the class if needed. The cost
of the byzantine bracelet kit is $10. Pairs of pliers and
additional kits will also be for sale in class.
ADVANCED CHAIN MAILLE WORKSHOP

Sunday, July 14; 1 PM – 4 PM
NON-CREDIT Tuition: $40; Materials Fee: $25
Continue to explore and create Chain Maille in this
advanced workshop, open to students who have
already taken the introductory course. Students must
have taken the first workshop or have some handson
experience with chain maille. The workshops will
continue to focus on making perfect closures of jump
rings and will teach a few more interesting weaves,
including the European 4-in-1 weave, the Celtic weave
and possibly the Persian weave. The only tools needed
to do chain maille are a pair of chain nose pliers. Pairs of
pliers will be available for use during the class if needed.
Pairs of pliers and additional kits will also be for sale in
class. Prerequisite: Beginning Chain Maille Workshop.
FASHION ILLUSTRATION WORKSHOP

THREE SESSIONS
Saturday, June 8 – June 22; 10 AM – 4 PM
NON-CREDIT Tuition: $200; 1.6 CEUS
This workshop will focus on the basic principles of
fashion illustration, from quick gesture drawings to
detailed renderings, concentrating on the construction
of the garment as it relates to the human figure.
Over the course of three sessions, students will build
confidence in their drawing skills by working from
direct observation of a costumed/clothed live model.
Students will explore a variety of reference materials,
become familiar with fashion silhouettes and learn
fundamental techniques to express the crucial visual
elements required to communicate a fashion design.
Students should expect homework in between class
meetings. A lunch break will be scheduled; students
may bring their lunch or visit a local eatery. Materials
needed: 18x24” charcoal and regular drawing paper,
drawing pencils, charcoal, ink and brush as well as
colored pencils or pastels.
Metal Manipulation

NON-CREDIT Tuition: $40/Materials Fee: $15
Students will work with a variety of metals. They will
learn to saw, dome, channel and use a disc cutter.
Pieces will be embellished with texturing and heat.
Student will have time to complete several pieces.
Torch-Fired Enamels

Sunday, June 16; 1 PM – 4 PM
NON-CREDIT Tuition: $40/Materials Fee: $20
Using powered glass and a propane torch, students
will create a rainbow of colorful enamel copped
pieces. These items will be transformed into earrings
and a pendant.
Spiral Weave Beaded Bracelet

Saturday, July 20; 1 PM – 4 PM
NON-Credit Tuition: $40; Materials Fee: $35
In this three-hour workshop you will learn to create a
spiral weave beaded bracelet. The spiral weave uses
two sizes and shapes of seed beads and creates a
highly textured and interesting look. All supplies to
create the bracelet, including instructions, are included
in the kit. No additional supplies or tools are needed.
