Wilmington Area
The City of Wilmington has been described as, “big city face, small town soul.”
Manageable and friendly, it has long been home to some of the oldest and most important corporations. While Wilmington is known for business, it offers a lively and welcoming environment for creative artists and students. The internationally-recognized Delaware Art Museum offers a collection of Pre-Raphaelite paintings, sculpture garden and visiting exhibitions of great renown. Within a couple blocks of the college are The Grand Opera House, the Delaware History Museum and the Christina Cultural Arts Center. In April of 2011, World Cafe Live at The Queen opened its doors, just a block south of DCAD, as a venue to enjoy live music. The DuPont Theatre at the Hotel DuPont is Wilmington's venue for Broadway shows. The newly-restored Theatre N is the city's popular art movie house and enjoyed by many students as a place to see independent films.
Students can visit the Wilmington Riverfront, located along the Christina River, offering a variety of dining and entertainment options as well as the new DuPont Environmental Education Center at the Russell W. Peterson Urban Wildlife Refuge. The Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts features the latest work by artists of today, as well as providing studios, a cyber café and theater. Wilmington's minor league baseball team, the Wilmington Blue Rocks, also makes its home on the Riverfront at Frawley Stadium.
